Guide to Finding the Right Hearing Aid Batteries for You

Jun 23rd 2021

With an increase in accessibility to hearing aids in recent years, more Americans spanning different age groups are finding themselves wearing hearing aids. Nearly 25% of adults aged 60-74 have disabling hearing loss and could benefit from the use of hearing aids. This number jumps to 50% when the age of adults is 75 years or older. With the need for hearing aids becoming more and more prevalent, it is important to know which type of hearing aid will work for you and what types of batteries your hearing aids will need. We at Local Battery have put together a first-time hearing aid battery guide for customers who are new to hearing aids and are unsure what batteries will work for them.

Types of Hearing Aid Batteries

When it comes to hearing aid batteries, they come in various different sizes including size 10, size 13, size 675, and size 312 hearing aid batteries. Generally, there are 2 main types of hearing aid batteries, rechargeable batteries, and zinc-air button disposable batteries. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages and it is entirely up to you which type you will be more comfortable with.

Rechargeable Batteries

Rechargeable hearing aid batteries are built into the hearing aid and are unable to be removed. Instead of removing the batteries when they are dead, you simply place your hearing aids on a docking station to be recharged overnight. Many hearing aid users prefer this type of battery because they do not have to worry about buying more batteries and taking spare batteries with them in case their hearing aids die while they are out somewhere. All they have to do is remember to charge them each night and they are ready to use every morning.

Hearing aid users who have dexterity issues also find that rechargeable batteries are much easier to use because they do not have to worry about changing the tiny little battery in their hearing aids. Rechargeable hearing aid batteries are also safer around kids and pets because the zinc in disposable batteries can be extremely toxic if swallowed by a child or a beloved pet. Some users dislike rechargeable batteries because they have to be docked and charging for a certain amount of time, meaning you cannot use your hearing aids while they are charging.

Disposable Batteries

Zinc-air button disposable batteries are the most commonly used hearing aid batteries. These batteries come with a factory-sealed back that protects them from the air. When the back is peeled off, the zinc in the battery interacts with the oxygen in the air making zinc oxide. This activates your hearing aid batteries, so it is important not to peel off the back until you are ready to use them. Once they are activated they cannot be un-activated.

Some hearing aid users prefer disposable hearing aid batteries because they offer a larger selection of hearing aid styles. Others prefer disposables because they do not have to remember to charge the batteries, whenever they need to use their hearing aids, they are ready to go! Disposable hearing aid batteries are the most common type of hearing aid batteries and can be found almost anywhere which is another reason for their appeal.

Disposable batteries come in four different sizes which are color-coded for easy viewing. The life of the battery is determined by the size of the battery. Disposable batteries can last anywhere from 3 to 22 days depending on which size the battery is. For example, size 312 hearing aid batteries are the second smallest hearing aid batteries and can last anywhere from 3 to 10 days. Below is a size guide for all disposable hearing aid battery sizes.
